London’s Norwich Citadel Band Makes Detroit Debut
One of The Salvation Army’s top brass bands makes a stop
at Southfield’s Millennium Centre Oct. 16 for FREE concert
London’s Norwich Citadel Brass Band makes a rare stop at the Millennium Centre in Southfield (15600 J. L. Hudson Drive) at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16. This tour marks the band’s Detroit debut and only the third time the London Norwich Citadel Band has toured the U.S. in its 128-year history. Admission to the concert is free, however, a free will offering will be taken at the performance.
The London Norwich Citadel Band is one of The Salvation Army’s premier brass bands and is considered by many to be one of the best brass bands in the world. Led by Bandmaster Richard Woodrow, the band has toured to all parts of the globe, including Africa, Europe and Canada.
The Norwich Citadel Band was established in 1882 following a visit by General William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army, who came to preach at the newly opened church in the heart of Norwich, England. The General challenged its citizens to “Get a drum and rouse Norwich from one end to the other!” This directive was immediately acted upon, a set of new instruments purchased and a band formed. By December 1882 the band was heard playing and marching the streets proclaiming the message of God's love for all.
Today the bandsmen are justly proud of their heritage. In the ‘Fine City’ of Norwich, the band provides music for many civic, church and cultural events, including the annual Lord Mayor’s Civic Service and the Remembrance Day parade. It also regularly plays in the magnificent 11th century Cathedral and in concert halls around the region.
