HELP Domestic Violence Victims 2 become Survivors through SAFE and HopeLine® in October

1 Old Cell Phone +
1 Financial Seminar on 10/23 =
2 FREE ways to Help Domestic Violence Survivors

In September I wrote a blog post concerning the growing threat of domestic violence in metro Detroit due to the downturn in the economy.  The statistics that were given in that post were disturbing:

- Domestic abuse is 3 times more likely to occur when a family is under financial stress

- Domestic abuse is 3 times more likely to occur if a partner has been unemployed 2 or more times

- Every 9 seconds a woman is abused or beaten by her partner

The good news is that you can help domestic violence victims during the month of October without spending any money.  Here's how...

1.  Donate Your Old Cell Phone to the Verizon HopeLine® Program

Now I know that everyone has at least one old cell phone just laying around the house.  Now imagine that dusty old cell phone being turned into a brand new phone with free airtime to help a domestic violence victim.  Sounds good right?

Verizon Wireless’ long-running HopeLine® program collects no-longer-used wireless phones and equipment in any condition from any service provider. The used phones are either refurbished or recycled. With the funds raised from the sale of the refurbished phones, Verizon Wireless donates wireless phones and airtime to survivors, and provides funding and other contributions to non-profit domestic violence shelters and prevention programs across the country.

All you have to do is take your old cell phone to the nearest store that accepts donations for the Hopeline program.  There are tons of Hopeline donation locations in the Detroit area at Verizon Communication Stores.  If there is no location near you, you can donate your cell phone to Hopeline by mail with FREE shipping.

2. Come out to the FREE Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (SAFE) Health & Wealth Expo on 10/23

Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (S.A.F.E.) helps domestic violence survivors in metro Detroit gain the skills to earn a decent living and regain their lives by providing help with career mapping, resume writing, interviewing, employment rights, financial literacy, and entrepreneur skills.

On Saturday, October 23, 2010, S.A.F.E. will hold a FREE Health & Wealth Expo at the Northwest Activities Center at 18100 Meyers Road in Detroit. There will be FREE information and resources on healthy living on a budget, stress reduction, job seeking tips and personal finance. This event includes lunch, giveaways, and sample packs from various vendors. The event is totally FREE and open to the public.

S.A.F.E. is looking for individuals willing to volunteer to help with the seminar.  They are also looking for corporations that can provide grants and sponsorships to further help domestic violence survivors.  If you can help, go to http://www.safehealthwealth.com/  for more information.

It is amazing that through old cell phones and financial empowerment seminars, domestic violence victims can become domestic violence survivors.  Just a few small efforts on your part can make all the difference...
