VISIT DETROIT CULTURAL CENTER MUSEUMS FOR FREE AT THE 38TH ANNUAL NOEL NIGHT
The 38th annual Noel Night will take place this Saturday, December 4th from 5:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. in Midtown Detroit's Cultural Center Area. Over 60 Midtown venues, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Science Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Historical Museum, and the Detroit Public Library, amongst many others, open their doors to the public free of charge during this Cultural Center-wide holiday "open house."
Activities include horse-drawn carriage rides, holiday shopping, family craft activities and performances by over 120 area music, theatre, and dance groups. The evening's festivities culminate with a community sing-along on Woodward Avenue led by the Salvation Army Band — a long-standing Noel Night tradition.
Noel Night activities take place in and around Midtown Detroit's Cultural Center institutions, primarily between Cass and John R and Kirby and Willis. Free shuttle service is offered between participating venues. Convenient parking is available in area lots. Noel Night is produced by the University Cultural Center Association (UCCA), a nonprofit community development organization that supports economic growth in Detroit's Midtown district.

REVIEW: "Essence of Motown Literary Conference" - Is there a Book in you?
Essence of Motown Literary Conference
Nov 13 - Northwest Activity Center
On Saturday, November 13th, I attended the Essence of Motown Literary Conference at the Northwest Activity Center on Detroit's Northwest side. I was invited to attend the conference by it's organizer Sylvia Hubbard. Oprah better move over because Sylvia is a mom, a blogger, an author of 14 books, an editor, a self publisher, the founder of the Michigan Writers Network, and the owner of a literary radio network. Sylvia has been a very supportive follower of my blog and I was very pleased and honored when I received her invitation to attend this conference.
Is there a Book in YOU?
Even though I write as part of blogging, there is no way that I consider myself a writer. But the theme of this conference "Is There a Book in You?" did make me wonder what goes into being a published author and this conference gave me a brief, but very informative look into the business of book publishing.
During the conference, I met some wonderful people who were all at different stages in their books. I met the "want a be" writers who have not yet started a book, but really want to be authors one day. I also met the writers who have started one or more books, but have yet to finish any of them. Most of the writers that I met have finished their books and are in the process of getting them published. And this is where the Essence of Motown Literary Conference plays a role in educating writers on the process of publishing their books.
Education is Key in the Business of Book Publishing
Sylvia started the Essence of Motown Literary Conference to educate writers because she was sick of seeing writers being taken advantage of by predatory publishers. If writers are not careful they can spend thousands of dollars with the wrong publisher and have nothing to show for their money. This conference featured workshops and panel discussions on writing, publishing, and marketing. Writers could also get 1:1 help with publisher pitches, social media coaching, and manuscript critiques.
Book Publishing 101
Most of my book reading these days are e-books and Sylvia did a wonderful session on self publishing e-books. It turns out most of the same rules that apply to regular publishing also are part of e-publishing and there is precise formatting needed to submit a book to an e-publisher. One of the best sessions that I attended was by Valerie L. Coleman who is an author, editor, and publisher. Valerie's session called "Self-Publishing Made Easy Cash Machine!" was fast paced and delved into many of the aspects of self publishing from setting up an LLC and obtaining a vendor's license to how to get a copyright and how much to spend on printing. Valerie was funny, informative and a "trial by fire" expert in the area of self-publishing. She is also pretty darn good with branding since everything from her books to her business cards leads back to her website called PenOfTheWritER.com.
A Brand called Relentless
The keynote speaker at the conference luncheon was Relentless Aaron. I will admit I did not know anything about Relentless Aaron before I read his bio at the conference, but I have to say I was impressed by how much he has been able to accomplish in the literary world dispute some very bad setbacks in life. Relentless Aaron is the author of 30 books that focus on street culture, most of which he wrote while in prison. Writing allowed him to be in his own world during his incarceration where he was able to observe human nature and routines as the basis for his stories. He took the brand "Relentless" to express how he planned to live his life in pursuit of his dreams. He spoke about how all his experiences built one upon the other and when he was ready to put in the work, how everything came together in the form of book deals, magazine publishing and television shows. He stressed that there is a book within everyone and all that is needed is the "relentless" drive to bring it out.
I totally enjoyed my time at the Essence of Motown Literary Conference. I love learning new things and I was overloaded with new information about self publishing. While I don't know if there is a book in me, I do know where to go to get one published thanks to Sylvia Hubbard :).
FREE BOOKS!
Now everyone should know by now that I like to end my reviews with either a freebie or a giveaway. Well, it turns out that Sylvia Hubbard is an author that is not afraid of freebies. She has some of her older books and her short stories available on her website for FREE. So if you love a good book like I do, keep reading for an offer that you cannot refuse.

REVIEW: Road Rippers Radio Control Mobile Command Car
The Road Rippers R/C Mobile Command Car is one Stylish, Tough Cookie!
Road Rippers has a new line of deluxe sports cars that are pretty cool. Each car is designed after a popular licensed sports car. The car that I was given for review is a model of the Dodge Challenger. The remote is shaped like a walkie-talkie and not only controls the car, but also plays music and makes real life vehicle sounds.
You will need wire cutters or good scissors to get the vehicle and the remote out of the sturdy packaging. One of the problems that I have had with toy cars in the past is getting the screw out of the door on the bottom of the car to insert batteries. I had no such problems with this car. The screw came out with a regular phillips screwdriver and I was able to insert the 4 AA batteries without any issues. The remote also takes 3 AA batteries that were already inserted.
The remote has buttons for forward, reverse, right, and left. You can press combinations on the remote like forward+right to make the car go in a circle. There are also buttons for a horn, music, and sayings such as "Hang On! Rough Roads Ahead", "Burn Rubber Baby" and the rebel yell.
When the car is going forward, the head lights turn on which is very cool. We tried out the vehicle on the flat tile of the kitchen and also shag carpet and nothing stops this car. This tough car survived the kids dropping it repeatably from about 3 feet in the air and also stepping on it! - I was very impressed!!!
The Road Rippers R/C Mobile Command Car can be found at Amazon.com (affiliate link) and would make a great holiday gift. It retails for $35.00 and is recommended for ages 7+. Now, click on the play button below to see the car in action...

Disclosure: I was sent a complimentary Road Rippers R/C Mobile Command Car for the purpose of writing this review.

The Road Rippers R/C Mobile Command Car can be found at Amazon.com (affiliate link) and would make a great holiday gift. It retails for $35.00 and is recommended for ages 7+. Now, click on the play button below to see the car in action...

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Holiday Hair with Conair & scünci (CLOSED)
Holiday Hair has never been more easy...
As I age, I try to deal with my hair as little as possible. Gone are the days of elaborate hairstyles and now I just like to keep my style clean and neat. I have to admit that I have not updated my hair styling brush and accessories in years. So when I was asked to review new products from Conair and scünci, I jumped at the chance to try out the latest brushes and hair adornments.

I have to admit that I have not updated my hair styling brush and accessories in years. So when I was asked to review new products from Conair and scünci, I jumped at the chance to try out the latest brushes and hair adornments.
The key to a good blow-dry is a good brush and I was sent two by Conair to try-out. The Conair Gel Grips Cushion Brush has a soft gel handle that conforms to the shape of your hand so it is easy to hold on to and maneuver. It is great for detangling and styling thick hair and the flexible cushion base helps to prevent hair breakage.
The Conair Tourmaline Ceramic Small Porcupine Round Brush is a little technology wonder. It has finely crushed tourmaline in the nylon bristles and ceramic barrel. Tourmaline is a gemstone that naturally releases negative ions to tighten the hair cuticle layer and help seal in natural oils thus leaving hair more shiny and silky. And who does not want shiny hair?

New fun and elegant hair accessories from scünci
I was also sent two hair accessories from scünci. The first is the scünci Evolution Hair Bands pack. Now my hair is too short for me to evaluate this product, but the Evolution Hair Bands are part of the scünci No Slip Grip line that are suppose to stay in place until you take them out. The pack contains 14 bands that have a new "jelly" look and come in the fun colors of purple, green, red, orange, and yellow.
scunci Upzing Double Combs |
The Conair brushes and the scünci hair accessories are available nationwide at mass market and drug store retailers. You can also go over to the scünci Facebook page for a chance to win a weekly gift from Scünci and Conair in the Conair & scünci Holiday Hair Haul Sweepstakes.
One FREEISMYLIFE reader will win a Conair Tourmaline Ceramic Small Porcupine Round Brush, a Conair Gel Grips Cushion Brush, the scünci Upzing Double Combs and a scünci Evolution Hair Bands pack. HOLLA to the FREE!

MOVIE REVIEW: Love and Other Drugs
Guest blogger Liz Parker is back from seeing "Love and Other Drugs" staring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. Did Liz "love" it or did she need some real drugs to get through it? Let's read what Liz thinks...
Even though I had heard that this movie was only so-so, I was expecting more from it, maybe because it has two major A-listers starring in it, but also because the trailer looked really cute. Unfortunately, although the movie has its moments, it ended up just being another ho-hum romantic movie - not even a romantic comedy, actually.
The year is 1996, and Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal, "Prince of Persia") has just quit his job as salesman at an electronic company, and is looking for something new. His brother, Josh (Josh Gad, TV's "Woke Up Dead"), has a contact at Pfizer, so he hooks him up with a job as a Pfizer sales representative. Jamie is already charming, and he soon puts his charms to work, coaxing nurses and doctors alike to stock the shelves with Pfizer's products, especially once Viagra is released. He soon meets Maggie (Anne Hathaway, "Alice in Wonderland") at a doctor's office, however, and although they both swear that they aren't looking for a relationship, they soon begin to fall in love with each other.
Gyllenhaal and Hathaway do quite well in this movie - especially Hathaway, as she is faced with the difficult task of playing a woman who suffers from Parkinson's Disease - but unfortunately, the script has cheesy moments and a lot of tangents. There are also some noticeable supporting actors, such as Oliver Platt (TV's "The Big C") as a co-rep of Gyllenhaal's; Hank Azaria ("Year One") as one of the doctors that Gyllenhaal interacts with; and Judy Greer (TV's "Glenn Martin DDS") as a woman Gyllenhaal strings along for a bit, as she is a nurse who works for Azaria's character (and thus can give Pfizer samples to his patients).
Maybe see this movie. I felt that it dragged in some parts, and as it's about 2 hours long (a little long for a "fluff" movie), this was not good. The film is rated "R" for "strong sexual content, nudity, pervasive language, and some drug material," but it's mostly the sexual content/nudity that probably gave this movie its "R" rating, as there is a lot of it, mostly of the female variety. If you are looking for a "fluffy" romantic film, then this might fulfill you, but otherwise I would suggest seeing "Tangled" or "Burlesque" instead.
"Love and Other Drugs" is currently showing in theaters.
