MOVIE REVIEW: The Green Hornet

Entertaining, silly and action packed

Tonight I saw an advance screening of the movie "The Green Hornet" at the Birmingham Palladium. I  almost did not see this movie due to a security issue that delayed the screening for an hour.  It was very interesting to see how folks without cellphones and electronics (they were not allowed in the theater) entertain themselves during a delay.  After a round of campfire songs and hand puppets on the screen (I am not exaggerating), the movie was finally ready to be viewed.

I remember seeing The Green Hornet on television when I was a kid.  My father loved this television show and I have vague memories of the masked duo and especially of The Green Hornet's sidekick Kato beating up all the bad guys.

In this movie version, actor Seth Rogen plays Britt Reid, a spoiled, rich kid that is wasting his life partying and drinking to deal with the pain of being rejected by his father James Reid (played by Tom Wilkinson) the owner a major city newspaper.  The two Reids have had a bad relationship since Britt's mom died when he was just a child.  When one day James Reid is found dead of a supposed bee sting, Britt is left as head of a newspaper empire that he knows nothing about running.  After the funeral, Britt discovers that his dad's driver Kato (played by Jay Chou) is a genius who is a marital arts, explosives, weapons, and car expert.   During the execution of a silly prank, the two stop a gang of thugs from hurting a young couple, and Britt comes up with the idea of them teaming up to fight crime in the city.

The movie follows their, at times silly, and at times very violent rise to power to be known as The Green Hornet. Any movie where Seth Rogen is playing the lead character is going to be funny and crazy and The Green Hornet is no exception.  There are scenes where I tried to keep from laughing but just could not and other times where the movie was so silly that I had to shake my head.  The action is this movie is awesome.  There is not one boring minute in the whole two hours. The action reminded me of "From Paris With Love" where everything is very "tongue in cheek" violent, but violent none the less. Cameron Diaz is also in the movie as Britt's smoking  hot secretary and news research assistant who unknowingly is guiding the pair in how to fight crime.

My son loved this movie and I thought it was great.  If he were any younger I don't think I would have allowed him to see it.  It is very violent and has some very strong language so don't be fooled into thinking it is anything like the television show.  If you are looking for action, this is definitely the movie for you.  It is entertaining, silly, and action packed and the end is setup for many sequels to come.

"The Green Hornet" opens in theaters on January 14, 2011.
