Detroit author Tara Michener teaches kids self-esteem through her stories |
As we come up on the birthday celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., lines from his famous "I Have A Dream" speech (which he recited first in Detroit) ring loud and clear in my mind ...
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
That is the dream of all parents for their children. But unfortunately, we still live in a world where people judge others by how they look and where they come from.
Shallow? Yes. Mean? Definitely. Real? Totally.
And all this "mean girl" nonsense is messing with the one thing we parents want to protect at all costs - our kids' self-esteem. It is impossible to turn on the television these days without hearing some sad story about how kids are committing suicide because of bullying.
Local Detroit area writer Tara Michener has one single goal in life - to teach children and adults the importance of diversity and self-esteem through the written word. Tara is the author of three books that are aimed directly at teaching the importance of self-worth:
Who I Am Not What I Am (early reader-elementary)
Meet Janelle a fun girl who discovers the secret to happiness is loving herself for who she is not for fitting into what others want her to be. Join her on her adventure as she learns that true beauty comes from who she is not what she is.
100% Real (elementary level)
What does it mean to be real? Meet Zoey who wonders the same thing after her classmates question her about being adopted. However, with the help of her new friend Janelle and her parents, she discovers that she has more in common with her family than she realized... This book is great for anyone who wants to know more about self-esteem and loving themselves and others for who they are.
Summer Camp Survival (5th-9th grade)
Summer Camp is supposed to be easy right? Not for Mackenzie Larson who has always been considered "the brain" in her small town. Kids at school tease her for being smart and friendless. Vowing things will be different this summer, she arrives at summer camp determined to make new friends only to find the girls here are meaner then back home! Teased and tormented about her hair, weight and everything else, she feels completely alone and hopeless . . . until she meets Zach, a hazel-eyed soccer player from the boys' camp, who thinks she is cool. But will Mackenzie finally take a look inside and believe in herself?
So if you are looking for well written stories to teach your child the importance of diversity and self-esteem, check out Tara's books. She will teach you that being who you really are is the new cool :)
