My Ford Team of Volunteers at the Science & Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit |
On Tuesday March 15th, I performed my yearly community service by heading up a team of Ford Motor Company volunteers for the 54th Annual Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit. The science fair is for students in the 6th through 12th grades representing Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties. This is my 6th year volunteering at the science fair for setup day. Setup day is the day that all the students, teachers, and parents come to Cobo Hall to drop off and setup the displays before the projects are officially judged the next day.
One of things that I love about volunteering at this event is seeing the excited faces of the students as they setup their science displays. Some of the students come on buses with their entire class and others come with their parents in tow. There is lots of final touches to get everything just so. And there is also lots of cameras snapping photos to capture the proud moments.

Junior science projects are part of the blind judging so they won't know if they won until they come back to pickup their displays. The seniors are judged not only for their displays, but also for the live presentations that they make before the judges. I am sure there is a lot of nail biting going on this week in the Senior division. The Senior Grand Award winners will compete at the Michigan Science Fair on April 9 at Kettering University and at the International Science Fair May 8-13 in Los Angeles, California.
This year's science fair is 25% larger than in previous years due to a mandate that more Detroit Public School participate in the fair. The Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit is one of the longest running and largest science fairs in the world.
Regardless of the outcome, I can tell you that all the kids did and great job this year. The public is invited down to Cobo Hall to see all these great exhibits in person. Public viewing is Thursday, March 17th and Friday, March 19th. This fair is one of the best keep secrets in Detroit. Please come out and support the fair and let our children know that you are proud of their accomplishments.
Enjoy!
