FREE DSO Community Concerts 9/29 9/30 10/1 10/2 10/4 TICKETS NEEDED

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra announce DSO FREE Community Week with Five FREE Concerts

As the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) pursues its goal of becoming the most accessible orchestra on the planet, the DSO and Music Director Leonard Slatkin are pleased to present five free concerts through DSO Community Week from September 29-October 2, just one week before the 2011/12 season officially opens.

Concert performances will occur at locations in Troy, Ypsilanti, Woodhaven and Detroit, culminating in a special open house performance at Orchestra Hall. DSO Community Week is made possible by the DTE Energy Foundation. Although tickets are FREE to all performances, in most cases reservations are required as space is limited. (See the listing below of concert locations which includes information on reserving tickets.)

"The DTE Energy Foundation is proud to partner with one of our state's finest institutions to expand the DSO's reach beyond Downtown," said Fred Shell, DTE Energy Foundation. "This program will enrich the lives of music lovers, and as a bonus, build lasting relationships between the DSO and communities throughout Southeastern Michigan."

These complimentary concerts are a way to simultaneously say “thank you” to those patrons who are making the DSO a community-supported orchestra and share the orchestra’s magnificent sound. Free community concerts were one of Maestro Slatkin’s first initiatives when he began his tenure with the DSO in 2008, which is why he will be at the orchestra’s helm for all five performances.

“When we think outside the box, as we continue to celebrate our home at Orchestra Hall, we’re not only broadening our audience base by geographic area, but also making it easier for anyone to experience live, classical music,” said Maestro Slatkin.

Concert repertoire will include classical favorites such as selections from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World,” Weber’s Overture to Oberon, Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and selections from Rodgers’ & Hammerstein’s Sound of Music.
