I cannot believe that Summer is already over and school has begun. This time around, the first day of school has brought more changes than usual in my house. My son is now in Middle School and learning all the responsibilities that come along with growing up - like navigating around a much bigger school, making new friends, learning how to use a combination lock, changing clothes for gym, and remembering to call me on his cell phone when he gets to his after school program. My son not only survived his first day of school, but loves this new school and his new responsibilities.
I still remember my first day of Middle School. I was following in the footsteps of my over achiever older sister who had won every academic award at the school. On my first day of class, the teacher came up to me, looked me up and down and asked my last name. Since I look like my sister, I already knew where this was going. When the teacher found out my last name, she smiled and said she was expecting great things from me just like my sister had achieved. Talk about pressure from day one!
I survived all the changes and growing pains of Middle School and I know that my son will too. There is nothing like the feeling of branching out, learning new things, meeting new people and having new experiences. My son is loving all the changes, but he still wanted to go to McDonald's after school to get his favorite food - Chicken Nuggets with ketchup. I guess some things never change.
