On Wednesday night, my son and I had the pleasure of being at the Palace of Auburn Hills for opening night of the newest "Disney On Ice Presents" show called "Treasure Trove". Since we have seen many great Disney On Ice Shows over the last few years, I really did fear that "Treasure Trove" might be just a rehashing of previous Disney On Ice shows. But I am happy to report that "Treasure Trove" is a totally new, wonderful show that had the entire audience laughing, clapping and singing for the entire performance.
Most Disney On Ice shows start with mini performances of Disney stories in the first half and then a lengthy performance of one Disney story for the entire second half of the show. "Treasure Trove" does this in reverse with longer story performances in the first half and then a lot of short Disney stories after intermission.
Disney had everyone's blood pumping when we were all asked to stand up and do exercises with that superhuman Disney family - The Incredibles. After everyone was warmed up, the always favorite Minnie, Mickey, Donald Duck and Goofy took to the ice to welcome everyone. The first story was the telling of Alice in Wonderland which ended with a great "Radio City Rocket-style" spinning line of human playing cards that had everyone clapping. And you cannot have a Disney show without the story of Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Wendy, The Lost Boys and Tinker Bell. Tinker Bell and Peter Pan were enchanting to both parents and kids when they flew through the air and everyone loved when the evil Captain Hook was eaten by the giant alligator.
The second half was a wonderful journey of crowd favorite stories including "The Lion King" with the always favorite hit song "Hakuna Matata", Snow White with those lovable seven dwarfs singing the song "Heigh-Ho Heigh-Ho", The Little Mermaid's Ariel and the hand clapping song "Under the Sea" and Princess Jasmine riding on her magic carpet singing "A Whole New World".
I was very happy that Disney included the stories of the newest princesses - Rapunzel, frying pan and all, and of course Tiana with her toe tapping New Orleans jazz music. And everyone loved the show's end where all the princesses took to the ice with their princes to let everyone know that dreams really do come true.
