My son making a donation to LaToniya Jones, the founder of P.O.W.E.R. Organization |
On May 6th, I wrote a blog post telling everyone about the "Make The Switch" Challenge with Jennie-O & Champions for Kids. Champions for Kids is an organization that encourages people to give to children via simple service projects in their community. They have partnered with Jennie-O during the month of May to highlight the power of kids living a healthier lifestyle by switching out just one thing in their diet and then donating that money to charity.
I choose to limit carbonated soda in my son's diet and donate flavored water, information on the Jennie-O "Make The Switch" Challenge and a gift card to a local metro Detroit kids organization. My son is totally loving the flavored water instead of soda and I am very glad that we have found a way to give him a drink that still tastes great, but is more healthy for him.
The kids group that we made a donation to is called P.O.W.E.R. Organization (Presenting Opportunities Winning Effectual Results), a non-profit in metro Detroit that helps kids ages 7-16 to increase their confidence, competency, and proficiency with math. P.O.W.E.R. Organization is run by LaToniya Jones, a professor at Baker College in Auburn Hills. Ms. Jones eats, breaths and sleeps math and works tirelessly with kids to help them to love math too.
I watched Ms. Jones in action with P.O.W.E.R. Organization when I spoke at an event setup for the parents of the kids in the program. Not only does Ms. Jones make math fun, but she also provides lunch for the kids and their parents after each session. So I knew that this donation would be appreciated.

I want to encourage everyone to take the Jennie-O "Make The Switch" Challenge too. Switch out something in your kid's diet and then donate the money that you would have spent to a kid's organization or charity. You can report your switch to Champions for Kids at this link.
