Grimm Brothers Serve as Inspiration for Magical Events This Summer
Come one, come all to a land of imagination and wonder for Fairy Tales at Ford House: A Grimm Celebration. For the second consecutive summer, the historic estate will take visitors on a fantastical journey through some of the most well-known fairy tales. This year, Ford House celebrates the Brothers Grimm with an expansive art exhibit and numerous events sure to entertain families of all ages.< At the centerpiece of the celebration is Once Upon a Time: Grimmly Inspired, a community art exhibit located in the South Cottage. The exhibit features works submitted by adult and student artists placed alongside historic Grimm tale illustrations on loan from the Detroit Public Library. The magical exhibit runs July 28 through Nov. 4.
On Saturday, Aug. 4, the magic of the Grimm fairy tales will be brought to life as Ford House’s idyllic grounds set the stage for a day of creative exploration. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the Grimm Brothers’ first published story collection, Children’s and Household Tales. The 2nd annual Fairy Tale Festival will be an extravagant celebration of the brothers’ work welcoming guests into different storybook settings as they make their way across the estate grounds.
Families of all ages are invited to the festival to experience theatrical performances by Magic Carpet Ride Theater, Greg Lester’s Puppet Adventures and Grosse Pointe Theater’s youth group; musical performances; multicultural storytelling; story circles with Craig Fahle from WDET-FM, Syma Chowdhry from WWJ-TV and Anqunette Jamison and Amy Andrews from Fox 2 News as well as local teachers. Radio Disney will be hosting multiple fairy tale-themed activity stations featuring art and hands-on activities and The Parade Company will help set the tone of the enchanted day with floats, props and costumes. The sword fighting arena and strolling singing princesses help complete the experience for young visitors.
“We were overwhelmed with the positive response of our Fairy Tale initiative last year,” said Kathleen Mullins, president of Ford House. “The estate was a magical place for Edsel and Eleanor Ford and their children and Fairy Tales is the perfect way to invite curious dreamers – both young and old - to share in the magic and stretch the imagination . It’s a perfect opportunity to bring families together to create special memories.”
The Fairy Tale Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 on the day of the festival and can be purchased at www.fordhouse.org.
