The Shirt Box aims to collect 500 articles of men’s gently used clothing before the holiday season to help unemployed
The Shirt Box today announced the beginning of their “Shirts Off Our Backs: From Our Closet to Yours” clothing drive with a record-breaking collection goal of 500 items by November 1, to honor their five-year partnership with the Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO).
Since its inception in 2007, co-owners Ron Elkus and Rod Brown of the Farmington Hills store have partnered with NSO of Detroit to collect and donate thousands of gently used articles of men’s clothing and shoes in an effort to assist unemployed metro-Detroit men prepare for future interviews.
“We take pride in the generosity of our customers who work with us to provide the men of metro-Detroit clothing that makes them feel prepared and confident in their job search,” said Ron Elkus, co-owner of The Shirt Box. “It is our goal to supply men in need with the appropriate clothing that can bring about success in the workplace, or helpthem land a new job.”
With donations from The Shirt Box, NSO created and maintains Joe’s Closet, a shop that provides FREE clothing and accessories to men in need, who are often seeking business attire for job interviews, or recently employed but unable to afford the proper attire. In addition to NSO’s consumers, hundreds of men each year benefit from the clothing drive through non-profit organizations such as The Jewish Vocational Services, Freedom House and New Day have also benefited from the drive.
Individuals are encouraged to bring in gently used, clean garments to The Shirt Box during business hours, Monday-Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Thursday 9:30 – 7:00 p.m. Acceptable garments include dress shirts, slacks, ties and sports coats, to help the nonprofits’ clients fill their own closets for the upcoming holiday season.
