TECH REVIEW: Energizer Inductive Wireless Charger

Meet my new best friend - The Energizer Inductive Wireless Charger...
Toss your smartphone's corded charger away with this easy to use wireless charger ...

Do you remember life before smartphones?  Actually I am having a hard time remembering what I did before a had one device that I could carry with me to be a phone, calculator, alarm clock, digital camera, book reader, notepad, shopping assistant, mp3 player, watch, video player and even TV remote. Smartphones seem to be getting smarter everyday. But keeping them charged as we use them more can be a headache.

My nightly ritual of getting out the correct power cord and plugging in my smartphone for the overnight charge is necessary not not optimal.

One of the trends shown at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) involves charging smartphones wirelessly. The newest smartphones are being introduced onto the market with the wireless charging technology built into the phone.

Smartphones such as the Nexus 4 by Google and the Droid Razr HD by Motorola are manufactured with the technology to charge the device wirelessly using a compatible qi standard wireless charger.  Even popular smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a reasonably priced option available where you can buy a new back cover with the wireless charging components built in so that the S3 can be charged wirelessly.

Since I own a Nexus 4, I have been waiting to try out one of the qi wireless chargers on the market. So I have very glad when Energizer sent me their Energizer Inductive Wireless Charger for review.

The Energizer Inductive Wireless Charger is not new to the market. It has been available now for a few years to use with separately purchased smartphone cover receivers (sleeves) that combine to enable wireless charging. But now that new smartphones have the technology built in, receiver sleeves are no longer needed for some of the newer smartphones which enable easier (and less expensive) wireless charging.

The Energizer Inductive Wireless Charger comes in single and double size for charging one or two smartphones. I was sent the single size charger which measures 5.91" (width), 7.918" (length). The charger is sloped to pitch from 0.93" (height at top) to 0.39" (height at bottom). The charger is black in color and trimmed in chrome on the edges for a little style. There is a blue light on the top of the charger that indicates that the phone is charging.

What I really liked about the Energizer Inductive Wireless Charger is its ease of use. I just placed my smartphone on the charger and boom, it started charging. I did not have to place the phone on the charger in any particular way nor did I have to take my smartphone out of it's case - you cannot get any easier than that. I am not sure just how long it takes to fully charge the phone since I only charge my phone overnight while I am sleeping.

While the Energizer Inductive Charger works great, one thing that I think could improve on the charger is for Energizer to offer it in other colors in addition to black. Since the unit is kind of on the large size, I think if it came in some cute colors like red, yellow, and green, it would be more stylish since the unit is always sitting out on a desk or table.  Also the slope of the charger is not good if you charge your phone without a case since it could slip off the base.

Pros -
- Easy to setup
- Don't have to place the phone in any particular way for charging
- Will charge through most protective cases

Cons -
- Kind of big in size
- Only available in black
- Slope of the unit might cause phones without a case to slip off the base.

Pricing for the Energizer Inductive Wireless charger is $89.00 (MSRP) for the Dual Zone Charger and $54.99 (MSRP) for the Single Zone Charger.
